How to Get a Real Estate License in Michigan

The Michigan Board of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs requires all potential agents to complete the following steps in order to become licensed. Follow the steps below to get started with your real estate career.

1. Complete 40 Hours of Required Pre-Licensing Education

Successfully complete the
required 40 clock-hour Pre-Licensing course. There are several different Michigan real estate colleges, many offer online classes as well as learning in-person coursework. Some Michigan real estate schools have an option for a Free Trial that can help determine if Kentucky real estate courses are right for you.

2. Pass the Course Final Exam

After you complete all the course materials and meet the minimum time requirement, there is a course final exam consisting of 100 questions. A minimum score of 70% is required to pass this exam.

3. Find a Sponsoring Broker

As you go through the process of earning your license, you’ll need to be sponsored by a current and active Michigan real estate Broker. Choosing the right Broker is a key success factor for building your new career.

4. Start the Application

To apply for your Michigan real estate license with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA),
click here. You’ll receive an email providing you with an exam candidate ID number that is required to register for the exam. License application fees are valid for one year and the following process must be completed within one year from the date fees are paid.

5. Pass the Michigan Real Estate Exam

PSI administers the Michigan real estate licensing exam. This 115-question test is comprised of two portions, covering both state and national requirements, which you will have 180 minutes to complete. You must receive a passing score of 70%. There are
exam prep courses to help test takers pass on the first try.

6. Obtain Your License

Once you have passed your exam and if you did not list an employer, your license application will remain incomplete until the department receives an Employing Broker notification. Once the department receives this notification your license will be issued.
