What Is Liquor Liability Insurance?

Liquor Liability Insurance, or alcohol liability insurance, provides a safety net of coverage for businesses that serve or furnish alcohol.

An example of a Liquor Liability claim could be an intoxicated customer who causes an accident resulting in injury as they’re leaving your business. Claims can also include a customer who gets into a brawl with another customer or a minor becoming intoxicated.

Liquor insurance can mitigate the out-of-pocket costs your business may be required to pay if faced with a claim.

FAQs About Liquor Liability Insurance

Liquor Liability Insurance helps cover claims caused by alcohol, like:

  • A customer consumes one too many vodka highballs and the next thing you know he’s started a barroom brawl and you have injured customers.
  • A customer getting wine-drunk and then driving away from the party only to cause a pedestrian accident.
  • An intoxicated customer smashing your vintage jukebox machine after tossing back too many of those fruity little drinks.

Event Liquor Liability Insurance may help cover alcohol-related claims at weddings and other events, such as:

  • An intoxicated bridesmaid drives home from the wedding and causes an accident resulting in injury on her way home.
  • One wedding guest enjoys the open bar a bit too much and starts a fight with another guest (our optional Assault & Battery coverage can help cover these costs).
  • A guest at a retirement party gets carried away after too many glasses of wine and spills their drink on the carpet, damaging the venue.

Alcohol vendors including but not limited to the following need liquor liability insurance:

Liquor vendors
face unique alcohol-related risks and need the protection of Liquor Liability Insurance.

The amount of Liquor Liability Insurance you need depends on the operations of your business. The limits start out at $100,000 per occurrence and $300,000 per aggregate. However, these limits can be increased to $250,000 per occurrence and $500,000 per aggregate or $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate.

If you have a catering business that sells alcohol year-round, you will want annual Liquor Liability Insurance so that you have continuous coverage in case a claim happens.

If your business only offers alcoholic beverages at events here and there, you do not need Annual Liquor Liability Insurance and instead would want an Event Liquor Liability Insurance policy.

Liquor Liability offers several different limits and coverages, giving you the ability to cater your insurance to your unique business needs.

As a food business that serves alcohol, you face a lot of risks. Liquor Liability Insurance can protect your business from expenses that arise as a result of:

  • Injury
  • Property damage
  • Accidents caused by someone you served alcohol to
  • And more as a result of your business operation.

Without insurance, these expenses could be financially crippling and even cost you your business.

According to your state’s dram shop law, you may be legally required to have Liquor Liability Insurance. Even if your state does not require you to have insurance, there are still good reasons why you should get covered.

If an accident were to occur involving your business or your patrons, like an intoxicated customer falling and injuring themselves or causing property damage, or causing an accident that hurts or kills someone else, you could be held liable to pay hefty expenses.

Liquor Liability Insurance can reduce the cost of insurance claims that could otherwise financially devastate your business.

Liquor Liability Insurance is the protection of General Liability insurance if you serve alcohol. So if your woodfired pizza restaurant serves cocktails during happy hour, you would need a Liquor Liability policy in addition to your General Liability policy in order to be fully protected from the consequences of claims.

A General Liability Insurance policy protects you against third-party injury and property damage claims but cannot protect you from alcohol-related claims.

Learn More About Liquor Vs. General Liability

Your business would need to list a landlord, event organizer, or property owner as an additional insured in order to extend your insurance protection to them. This protects the additional insured in case you cause any damage to their property such as spills or accidents. It is standard practice to list landlords or event organizers as an additional insured.
