Order from a hatchery for best results! Not worth the money nor effort involved.
If you place the egg on your ear and hear pipping and chirping then they are alive and trying to get out. I heard this and I waited another eight hours did not see anything come through the egg, not even a small pip hole. I waited another 8 hours and on just one there was a small pip hole with no change in the size. I could hear the 4 chicks chirping but they stopped peaking at the inside. I waited another 4 hours, the next day and still no change in a break through. I could hear chirping in two eggs now and the peaking had all stopped. I started picking away at the one with the hole so the chick would breath. I candled the other three and saw no movement and proceeded an emergency c-section chicken birth. I broke the eggs on the correct side where the beak would be via the candling so they could breath. When I broke through, they stared out at me and started chirping. I placed the ones that had not absorbed all the egg yolk back in the incubator. since I knew they were now safe. I placed the ones that was still attached to the egg back in the incubator and closed it up. I waited 24 hours and checked again and found all 4 to still be alive, dry, chirping and running around. After the 3rd day, I placed all four in their brooder. after 2 weeks I placed them all in a bigger brooder and after 4 weeks, I placed the all in yet a bigger brooder. They are all now 6 weeks old and waiting for the weather to get warmer to go outside in their new home.
I am new at all this but, I used my common sense after the first one died and I went with my gut feeling and took matters into my own mind and rescued them all from their shell of doom. I have since learned that chicks that are not strong enough to break through an egg shell might be because of the what the egg layer is fed or how they are treated. Maybe to much stress in their life? IDK but on day 19 if you place the egg against your ear and hear chirps or pipping but see no break through then help them out. Make sure to allow them to absorbed the egg yolk. Play it by ear and if they seem to be energized enough to go to the brooder then move them. I believe the first one died because I did what they said to do on the internet and left him in the incubator for three days and I didn't trust my own instinct which was get him out and give him water and food.
We have had extremely hot weather and she didn't want to sit on the eggs it was so hot. But did go back regularly and there were 3 others taking turns on the nest. I don't know why we lost the 2 or why the other 3 didn't develop. Our broody chicken is so proud and is finally off her nest and is being a great momma. We're happy with the one chick because our momma just wanted a baby. I gave 3 stars because only half the eggs seemed fertilized.
